Playing Rules - Grades 3/4
Unless otherwise noted, Lowell Rec Basketball will use the rules as set forth by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association ("MIAA").
Lowell Rec Specific Rules
- Prior to the start of the game, both coaches will identify and agree on 2 parent volunteers (Scoreboard & Scorebook)
- Games will consist of four 10-minute quarters. In the event of a tie the teams will play one 2-minute overtime. A game can end in a tie after the overtime period.
- The game clock will run continuously with the exception of
- Official timeouts
- Team timeouts
- Last 2-minutes of each half and overtime. (Normal clock stoppage rules apply.)
- Each team will get two 1-minute timeouts per half and overtime period. Timeouts do not carry over.
- All players MUST receive equal playing time relative to when they arrive.
Grade 3/4 Specific Rules
- Official size 6 ball will be used.
- No shot clock.
- No full-court press allowed.
- No 10-second clock.
- Back court violations will be enforced.
- Teams MUST attempt to play a man to man defense.
- On possession change the defense must retreat past the top of the key and give the offense five seconds once they cross half-court before engaging above the key. After the five seconds the defense is free to engage the offence anywhere on the court.
- Traveling will be enforced at the discretion of the Official.
- Fouls will be enforced at the discretion of the Official.
- Free throws will be taken from the FT line. Players are allowed to jump over the line on the shot.
- Players CANNOT foul out. Coaches and officials will explain corrective actions to the player.
- Hard fouls will not be tolerated and if repeated after a warning will result in player being ejected.
- Any player ejected from the game will be suspended at least one additional game.
